synthesis

synthesis is an interactive networked art installation exploring the oft-ignored but intrinsic biology vital to developing the technological landscape. Sixteen sensors are placed throughout our creative hub, the Rogers Communication Centre (RCC), covertly collecting live human data and communicating it to the exhibition space across campus.

Human presence is distilled to an exploitable percentage - informing the content of self-collected video material. With no traffic, the video art plays abruptly spliced industrial cinematography. With more traffic - more life - the video feed progressively adopts a softer pace; featuring naturalistic scenes (ponds, wildlife, etc.) shot in home-video style. The gentler flow seeks to subvert chaos of human surplus - highlighting the vitality of creatives in a desensitized, tech-oriented society. This footage, presented on CRT TVs, is scattered throughout the space and upon plinths in a layout reminiscent of an industrial skyline and towering woods. At the center sits an anatomical resin heart filled with water. Tied to the ratio of motion in the RCC, a pump converts the data into bubbling life once a specified threshold is reached. From this source emerges foliage growing atop surrounding structures which, the further it strays, the more it becomes petrified by the industrial landscape. Connecting two locations across campus, the piece reflects the inhabitants within the “heart” of The Creative School community; alive through their never-ending movement.

Bonded by our mutual fascination of networked art pieces, the artists behind synthesis - are a collective formed to further examine the tenuous bond between digital and physical experiences. Through the use of technology for data collection and visualization, our collective forges immersive & interactive experiences that invite audiences to subvert preconceived notions surrounding technology & the human experience. We explore the connection between humans and technology from an optimistic standpoint - highlighting the intrinsic yet unassumed vitality of human creativity in the technosphere.

We endeavour to represent the experiences of our members and communities; leading with empathy and curiosity to dismantle existing societal preconceptions & biases. Our diverse backgrounds and expertise allow us to challenge the boundaries of existing mediums - and bring new depths to our work in how they are experienced. Our collective vows to uphold the values of new media - aiming to be champions of growth, and always learning in an ever-evolving artistic landscape. Anchored by our love of community & connectivity we strive towards our collective goal: reminding ourselves and others to recognize that everything is connected.
